Convert KML/KMZ from Google Earth to UTM coordinates (and coordinates to KML)
Open a Google Earth KML or KMZ file and see every vertex in UTM and latitude/longitude, with the area and perimeter of polygons. Or go the other way: paste coordinates and download a KML to open in Google Earth. Your file never leaves your device.
In Google Earth Pro: right-click the polygon or the folder › Save Place As… › KML or KMZ. The coordinates stay in WGS 84, the datum used by KML.
Accepts E N or name E N, and lat/long in decimal degrees or degrees/minutes/seconds (without a letter, positive = North/East).

KML, KMZ and UTM: what is the difference
KML is the Google Earth format: a text (XML) file with the points as longitude, latitude and altitude, in decimal degrees on WGS 84. KMZ is the same KML zipped (sometimes with icons and photos inside). For CAD, GNSS or a legal description you need UTM coordinates (E, N, in meters): here the conversion uses the Krüger series on the GRS80 ellipsoid, the same as our UTM converter.
Be careful with the Google Earth altitude: it comes from Google’s terrain model (or is zero if the drawing was “clamped to ground”) and is not a survey elevation. And a drawing made in Google Earth is only as accurate as the satellite imagery (a few meters): good for planning, not for boundary or cadastral surveys.
FAQ
How do I convert KML to UTM coordinates?
Open the .kml or .kmz file on this page: every point, line and polygon is listed with its vertices in latitude/longitude and in UTM (E, N and zone), ready to copy or download as CSV. The zone is picked from the center of the drawing (all vertices in the same zone), or you can force a zone.
How do I turn UTM coordinates into a KML for Google Earth?
On the “Coordinates → KML” tab, paste the points (name, E, N), choose the zone and whether it is a polygon, a line or points, then click download. Just open the file in Google Earth (or drag it in).
What is the difference between KML and KMZ?
A KMZ is a zipped KML (a ZIP file with doc.kml inside, sometimes with images). This tool opens both: the KMZ is unzipped right here, in your browser.
Is the area of a Google Earth polygon reliable?
The math is exact for the vertices in the file, but a drawing in Google Earth depends on the satellite imagery, which may be offset by a few meters. For deeds, boundary surveys or official registration, a proper field survey prevails.
What datum does KML use?
KML always stores longitude and latitude on WGS 84, and the UTM coordinates shown here stay on WGS 84. Regional datums such as NAD83, ETRS89 or GDA2020 share the same ellipsoid, but today they differ from WGS 84 by a few decimeters up to about 2 m — usually negligible next to the accuracy of a drawing traced on satellite imagery, but not for survey-grade work.
