FAQ

How many square metres are in an acre?

1 acre = 4,046.86 m² (43,560 ft², or 4,840 yd²). A hectare is about two and a half acres: 1 ha = 2.471 acres.

How many acres are in a hectare?

1 hectare = 2.4711 acres, and 1 acre = 0.4047 ha. A hectare is a square of 100 × 100 m.

How big is a bigha?

It depends on the region: in West Bengal, Assam and Bangladesh 1 bigha = 1,337.8 m² (14,400 ft², 20 katha); the pucca bigha of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan is 2,529.3 m² (27,225 ft², 5/8 acre); in the Nepal Terai 1 bigha = 6,772.6 m². Check which one your document uses.

How many square feet are in a marla and a kanal?

In revenue records 1 marla = 272.25 ft² (25.29 m²) and 1 kanal = 20 marla = 5,445 ft² (505.86 m², 1/8 acre). Many housing societies in Pakistan use a 225 ft² marla and a 4,500 ft² kanal instead.

How big are a mu, a rai and a tsubo?

A Chinese mu = 666.67 m² (1/15 ha). A Thai rai = 1,600 m² (40 × 40 m, = 4 ngan). A Japanese tsubo (Korean pyeong, Taiwanese ping) = 3.3058 m².

What is a feddan?

The feddan, used in Egypt and Sudan, is 4,200.83 m² (about 1.04 acres), divided into 24 qirat of 175.03 m².

Which unit counts in official documents and surveys?

Most countries record land in hectares or square metres (the USA and a few others in acres). Traditional units are useful in conversation and old deeds; to know the real area of a plot it has to be surveyed.
