At INTERGEO 2022, I had the pleasure of visiting the Get Kids Into Survey booth and talking with Elaine Ball about how to get children into surveying. As the GKIS ambassador in Brazil, I am proud to share their mission of introducing surveying to young children.
The main goal of Get Kids Into Survey is to teach children about surveying and its many fields, such as hydrography and cartography. To do this, they have developed interactive posters and homework projects that kids can take part in. Children are encouraged to post their work on social media platforms such as YouTube and TikTok, spreading awareness of surveying even further.
What is even more impressive is that the project is entirely funded by the private surveying equipment industry. GKIS has some amazing sponsors behind it, as well as characters such as Simon the surveying alien. On every poster, children are challenged to find Simon in different places, which makes it a fun and engaging learning experience.
At the booth, GKIS had more than 600 posters to give away to children. Unfortunately, they ran out because of the high demand. But don't worry: Elaine suggested they could send the posters to anyone interested in the Americas.
